NIPT is a prenatal blood screening test that estimates the likelihood of certain chromosomal conditions in a developing baby. Small fragments of placental DNA circulate in the mother’s bloodstream; the laboratory analyses these cell-free DNA (cfDNA) fragments to look for an extra or missing copy of a chromosome.
Depending on the package, NIPT may screen for:
NIPT estimates whether a pregnancy has a higher or lower probability of certain conditions. A higher-probability result does not mean the baby has the condition, and a lower-probability result cannot rule out every condition. Discuss results with your obstetrician, fetal medicine specialist or genetic counsellor; diagnostic tests such as CVS or amniocentesis may be recommended. NIPT does not replace routine pregnancy check-ups or ultrasound.

Speak with your doctor about the purpose, benefits and limitations of NIPT before booking.
